Often overlooked, a surround sound receiver is the unsung hero of a great media room. The right receiver will allow for easy operation of A/V equipment, smooth switching between video sources, and speakers to perform to their potential. The new T 778 surround sound amplifier from NAD is an excellent option for those searching for a high-quality component for a home theater, surround sound system, or two-channel setup.

Powerful Performance from NAD’s Flagship Receiver
The T 778 comes loaded with favorite NAD features and many new upgrades. Most noticeably, the front of the receiver now boasts a gorgeous, color touch-screen display. The touchscreen isn’t just a cosmetic improvement; it gives access to setup menus to easily make adjustments without the need of an on-screen display. The display also shows album artwork and track information when using NAD’s streaming platform, BluOS. Our inner-nerd especially liked seeing the display transform in to an analog-style VU meter when using BluOS.

This 9.2 channel receiver utilizes a hybrid digital amplifier design and is capable of supporting a standard surround sound system or a 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup. NAD provides five different power ratings, but we think the most meaningful is the full disclosure power rating. Unlike standard FTC or dynamic ratings, full disclosure power reflects all channels being driven simultaneously at full bandwidth, which is a much more realistic scenario. The T 778’s full disclosure power is rated at 85 watts per channel, FTC rating is 140 watts per channel at 8 ohms, and dynamic rating is 165 watts at 8 ohms. There is plenty of power to efficiently drive most high-performance speakers well, and critics are quick to praise NAD’s ability to deliver rich, dynamic sound.
As expected, this new surround sound receiver makes use of NAD’s Modular Design Construction (MDC). This innovative feature essentially future-proofs the receiver, because as input/output technology advances, boards can be upgraded. This will definitely come in handy when NAD has an HDMI 2.1 board for this new model. MDC is just one of the ways NAD continues to provide tremendous value with its AV receivers.
Additionally, the T 778 includes:
- Six HDMI inputs (five rear and one on the front) and two HDMI outputs (one with support for 4K)
- A limited version of Dirac Live 3.0 room correction platform for frequency response adjustments (full version available for a fee)
- BluOS for easy access to streamed content from paid providers
- Support for Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) for high-resolution streaming
- Support for Apple AirPlay 2
- Support for integration with an IP control system (like Control4)
