NAD’s New Masters M33 Streaming DAC/Amplifier

by Gary M.

Do you stream movies or music at home? Chances are, the answer to that question is a resounding “yes.” Now, it’s possible to easily download or stream almost any movie, show, or song you want to enjoy. That convenience factor is great, of course, but streamed content often leaves a lot to be desired in regards to audio/video quality. In our last blog post, we shared an awesome solution for optimizing digital video downloads using Kaleidescape’s movie players and servers. Today, we want to highlight NAD’s M33 DAC/Amplifier for those looking to improve the audio quality of streamed music.

What is a DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter)?

Simply put, a digital-to-analog converter changes a digital audio signal into an analog one capable of being heard. After converting the digital file during playback, the resulting analog signals are sent to an amplifier to produce audio from speakers or headphones.

Many devices, like your smartphone, include internal DACs. The final audio output from these internal converters often contains clocking errors and jitter, which can significantly downgrade sound quality. An external DAC, however, is specifically designed to reduce these errors, allowing you to enjoy your music as the artist originally intended.

Cutting-Edge Technology and High Power for High-Res Audio Streaming

There are plenty of reasons we’re such big fans of NAD Electronics. This new flagship model is no different. Similar to the T 778 receiver, the M33 amp features a gorgeous, minimalist front with a 7” color touchscreen display, a volume knob, and a headphone jack.

To continue their long-standing tradition of leveraging cutting-edge technology, NAD incorporated Purifi Eigentakt™ amplifier technology in the M33. Purifi, a Danish company, specializes in analyzing all aspects of amplifier operations to correct the seemingly minor nuances that ultimately have a significant impact on performance. The first amplifier to utilize that technology, the M33 is a trail-blazing product capable of producing exceptional detail and transparency with ultra-low distortion and noise.

This new DAC/amplifier can function as the center of a whole-home audio system or can stand alone in a spectacular two-channel setup. A remote is included, or you can control the piece with a smartphone, tablet, or integrate it with many home automation systems, like Control4. The M33 Master DAC runs on NAD’s BluOS platform and can access most major streaming services, including those that offer high-resolution content, like Tidal. BluOS also supports Master Quality Authenticated (MQA), which is the new standard for high-resolution streaming.

Of course, when spending $4,999 on a streaming amplifier, it’s comforting to know the purchase will be a long-lasting investment. Luckily, the M33 is built with NAD’s Modular Design Construction (MDC) to allow for future expansion.

The M33 Master DAC/amplifier also features:

  • Up to 200W of power per channel
  • 32-BIT/384kHz ESS Sabre DAC
  • Six digital and three analog inputs
  • Dirac room correction for adjustments possible up to 500Hz
  • Support for Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) for high-resolution streaming
  • Wireless inputs for Apple AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth aptX HD audio codecs
